Monroe County Local History Room & Museum

The Monroe County Historical Society Inc is charted exclusively for education, to preserve, advance and disseminate the knowledge of the history of Monroe County, WI. It is a non profit membership 501c(3) organization under the direction of a board of directors.

MCHS was instrumental in establishing the Monroe County Local History Room, Wegner Grotto County Park, and Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum (now both distinct and separate organizations). Currently, MCHS owns and operates the Big Creek Church and vintage, one room Brackett School as historical sites.

MCHS offers several grant opportunities to schools and non profit groups engaged in projects involving Monroe County history. Click on a link below to learn more about these programs:

Special Project Grants for 4th-8th Grade Students [Not available at this time]

Special Project Grants for Organizations [open to Eagle Scout and Gold Award projects only at this time]

Transportation Grants for Visiting Monroe County Museums & Historical Sites [Application deadlines: Fall Tours: Sept. 10; Spring Tours: March 1]

Annual dues are $8.00 individual (annual), $10.00 family, $75.00 Life Membership (age 55 or older), $150.00 Life Membership (under age 55). We would like to invite you to join us at our quarterly and annual meetings and special events. Be sure to check our quarterly newsletter for announcements about upcoming meetings and special events.

The Monroe County Historical Society sponsors two HUGE arts and crafts shows annually, held in March and November at the Sparta High School.

MCHS publishes a quarterly newsletter featuring organizational news and items of historical interest. This newsletter is free to members.
